From the desk of Dr. Nandita Shah... The New Year is a time to reflect on the past and make plans. This year has started with a surge in Covid cases resulting in new restrictions and regulations. We all want to go back to the life as we knew it, but perhaps this is exactly what is causing the new surges. We need to understand the reason for the surge and make the necessary changes to prevent future pandemics. In the past, pandemics have largely emerged when a virus jumped from animals to humans. Our bodies always face bacteria and virus, and we develop an immune response. Although the virus still exists, our amazing bodies always respond appropriately and then there is a natural decline in the cases. Those with compromised immunity – people on immunosuppressants, on steroids, or chemotherapy are some examples of people that may still be at risk. A well-developed immune system can handle a variety of different pathogens. Today along with the pandemic we are facing a few other issues that maybe even more catastrophic than the pandemic – a surge in auto-immune diseases, cancers and climate change. These look seemingly disconnected but if we want to survive as a species we have to keep our sights on the larger picture at all times. | Let's make 2022 a Game Changer with our Ultimate Health Quiz this Republic Day - 26th January.
